Do you need some time to explore the streamlined TEKS for science to be prepared for class come August 2018? If yes, then join us and take advantage of the opportunity to analyze the revisions and eliminations of the science TEKS for this next school year. During this session, we will look through various lenses to discover how these changes will impact the science curriculum and classroom. Deep diving, TEKS unpacking, vertical alignment, and lesson adjustment are just a few of the activities participants will experience while making their own discoveries about the streamlined science TEKS. Welcome to an Exploration of the Algebra 1 TEKS adopted in 2012.  The focus will be on new content including the Mathematical Process Standards. Sections provide a document with links to student activities including those located at the Texas Algebra Ready website, to an instructional PowerPoint, to templates for foldables, to a content-centered video, and to the section quiz.

This course is designed to build content knowledge of special education teachers providing instructional services to students in the areas of Algebra and Algebraic Reasoning. It may also be used as a review for general education mathematics teachers or paraeducators who may be supporting struggling students in the general education classroom.

This course will sharpen your algebraic reasoning and skills to work with and communicate your algebraic thoughts to others. There are four components to the course.

Foundations for Understanding Mathematics: K-2

A primary cause of students’ dislike and/or difficulty with mathematics is that they see little relationship between skills too frequently taught in isolation and the fast-paced, high-interest lives they plug into. Even at this early age, students need to experience mathematics as important, fun and a natural part of their explorations. For this reason, topics in geometry, measurement, data analysis and representation and real-world problem solving are integrated into the three components of this course.

Geometry: The Shape of Our World, Grades 8-10

Our world is defined by space and spatial relationships of geometric shapes and elements. The arguments we use to defend our points of view to others model geometric thinking. The structures and arguments of geometry are one of the oldest, most practical and, to many students, the most relevant studies in mathematics. Skillful teachers in early grades build on students’ innate ability to describe their world by introducing precise geometric vocabulary and basic understandings.

Journaling the Next Chapter: Interactive Notebooks

In this course, we will build a learning community of teachers to share ideas and deepen our learning of how journals can be used in the science classroom. Journals are tools that are listed in the K-12 Science TEKS.  Notebooks help students record and communicate their learning throughout the year.  If used properly, they support effective science instruction for all students.

Participants will review critical statistics concepts in the strands and explore strategies for presenting learning opportunities to students.. You will be required to complete assignments and post reflections.  There is a minimum grade requirement of 70 and a minimum time requirement of 120 minutes in the course to receive credit.

This online training will provide you with resources and suggestions.  It is only in attempting to implement these techniques, that you can  begin to affect students' development of conceptual understanding of mathematics.  During your work through this course, feel free to contact us at Region 10 to help with any specific issues you are encountering in the classroom.
